Why Augustine
A Companion for an Unsettled Age
In the year 410, an army of Visigoths sacked Rome. For centuries the Eternal City had stood as the very symbol of order, law and civilisation, and in three days it seemed the world itself had come apart. Refugees poured across the Mediterranean carrying grief, rumour and blame.
In a port town on the North African coast, a bishop in his mid-fifties answered the moment differently. He did not deny the disaster, and he did not give in to despair. "Everyone is saying these are bad times, hard times," he told his congregation. "Let us live well, and the times will be good. We are the times. As we are, so are the times."
That bishop was Augustine of Hippo…and that conviction sits at the heart of this programme.
Why Now
We lead in our own unsettled age. Trusted institutions feel fragile. Competing ideologies pull at every decision. New technologies reshape the ground beneath us faster than we can map it. Augustine wrote from inside exactly this kind of moment and not as a saint in stained glass, but as a working leader and a clear-eyed diagnostician of culture, living through institutional collapse and competing visions of the good life. He is not a relic of a settled world. He is a guide for an unsettled one.
Why This Topic
Augustine's first question for any leader is not "What can you do?" but "What do you love?" He saw that we are not first thinking machines or bundles of preferences but we are lovers, drawn toward whatever we believe will make us whole. What an organisation loves, more than what it claims, shapes the culture it builds and the people it forms. From that one insight flows a whole way of seeing: that healthy cultures are built on humility and service, and that the way up is first down; that every community is defined by what it is ultimately for; that real leadership stewards people and resources without letting love of them curdle into possession. These are not abstractions. They are the daily substance of leading well.

Augustine's influence runs through much of modern ethics, political thought and moral psychology and recognised or not, across traditions secular and religious alike. He is someone to think with, not necessarily always to agree with. We invite you to bring your own convictions — and your own criticisms — into genuine conversation with his. His word for people on the move through this life was peregrinus: pilgrim. It is the root of our name, and of the journey we invite you on…leadership not as a possession to be seized, but as a pilgrimage to be walked, in good company.
